- Deadhead
- Deadhead is the distance a truck runs empty, typically between delivering one load and picking up the next.
Deadhead miles cost fuel, hours and wear while earning nothing, so they come straight out of the margin on the load that follows.
Reducing deadhead is a planning problem: it depends on knowing where each truck actually becomes free, not where it is right now.
A load that pays well but sits 300 empty miles away can be worth less than a nearer load paying less.
Deadhead is paid for out of the loaded miles, so a rate that reads acceptable per loaded mile can be a loss once the empty run to the pickup is set against it.
The cheapest way to cut it is knowing where a truck actually empties out and when, rather than where the last load was booked from.
