USDOT number lookup
Check any USDOT number against the FMCSA carrier census. You get the registered legal name, the city and state on file, fleet size, and whether the carrier holds for-hire authority. Free, and no account.
This tool deliberately does not publish carrier phone numbers, email addresses or street addresses. The federal file contains them, and 1,813,301 of the 2,112,462 carriers in it run six trucks or fewer, for whom the registered address is often a home address. Identifying a business is a fair use of public data. Handing over a contact list is not.
What a USDOT number actually is
A USDOT number identifies a motor carrier to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It is attached to the company, not to a truck or a driver, and it follows the business through inspections, crash reports and compliance reviews. It is not the same thing as an MC number, which authorises a carrier to move regulated freight across state lines for hire. The two are issued separately, so a carrier may hold one without the other.
What the register looks like
These are counts from the FMCSA carrier census, not estimates. They are worth knowing before reading any single record, because they show how unusual a large fleet actually is.
| Segment | Carriers |
|---|---|
| All registered carriers | 2,112,462 |
| Authorised for hire | 1,187,918 |
| Running 1–6 power units | 1,813,301 |
| Running 7–20 power units | 114,498 |
| Running 21–100 power units | 38,026 |

The distribution is the part people misjudge. Of 2,112,462 registered carriers, 1,813,301 run six trucks or fewer, and only 38,026 run between 21 and 100. American trucking is overwhelmingly small businesses, which is why a lookup returning two power units is the normal case rather than a red flag.
What this tool will not tell you
- Safety scores and inspection history. Those live in the FMCSA SAFER and SMS systems, which are the authoritative source and should be read there rather than second-hand.
- Insurance status. Filings change often, and a stale copy of an insurance record is worse than no copy. Check FMCSA directly before relying on it.
- Contact details. By choice, for the reason given above.
