- Fleet management software
- Fleet management software is the system that looks after the vehicles themselves: where they are, what they cost to run, when they are serviced and how they are driven.
The asset is the subject. A fleet management system answers questions about a truck or a trailer - where it is now, how much fuel it burned, when its next service falls due, whether the driver braked hard on Tuesday.
A TMS answers a different question about the same fleet: what is booked, what it pays, who is on it, whether it was invoiced and whether the money arrived. One is about the equipment, the other about the freight the equipment moves.
The distinction is worth getting right before buying, because the two are sold with overlapping language. A carrier whose real problem is that loads are tracked in a spreadsheet and invoices go out late will not fix it with vehicle telematics, however good the dashboards are.
Where they genuinely overlap is the driver and the truck, which both systems know about. The dividing line that holds up in practice: if the record is about the ASSET it belongs to fleet management, and if it is about the LOAD it belongs to the TMS.
Where both are in use, the gain comes from the telematics feeding the TMS rather than sitting beside it - the position of a truck means far more next to the load it is carrying than on a map by itself.
