- MC authority (operating authority)
- MC authority is the operating authority a carrier holds to provide a particular kind of transportation for hire, and it is a different thing from the USDOT Number that identifies the company.
The two get treated as one because a new carrier applies for both at once and receives two numbers in the same week. They answer different questions, and one can lapse while the other stands.
Operating authority is tied to the transportation being provided. The rule bars operating without it and, in the same breath, bars operating beyond the scope of what was granted - so authority for one kind of work is not authority for another, and a carrier that moves into new freight can be outside its own grant while holding a live number.
The USDOT Number goes with a safety registration, and covers running a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce at all. Our trucking compliance page states both requirements with the regulation linked, including what happens to a carrier found operating without the authority it needs.
The practical version: if a broker asks for your MC number they are asking what you are authorised to haul; if an enforcement officer asks for your USDOT Number they are asking who you are. A carrier under lease to somebody else may be running on their authority rather than its own, which is why the question of whose number appears on a load is not a formality.
