What is a lumper fee?

Lumper fee
A lumper fee is what a third-party crew charges to load or unload a trailer at a receiver.

Many warehouses require their own crews to unload, and the driver pays on the spot before being released.

The fee is normally reimbursed by the broker or shipper, but only if the receipt is captured and submitted with the invoice.

Lumper money is lost most often to a lost or unreadable receipt rather than to a dispute, which is why capturing it in the cab matters.

Lumper fees are normally paid at the dock and reimbursed afterwards, which makes the receipt the only thing standing between the carrier and an unrecovered cost.

Whether the fee comes back depends on the receipt: it is claimed against the invoice, and a fee paid without one is a cost the carrier absorbs.
