What is drayage?

Drayage
Drayage is the short-distance movement of a container between a port or rail terminal and a nearby facility.

Drayage runs are short but rarely simple: they depend on terminal appointments, chassis availability and container free time.

Because the miles are few, waiting time rather than distance is usually what determines whether the move was profitable.

Detention and per-diem charges accumulate quickly when a container is held beyond its free days, so timestamps matter more than on long-haul work.

Drayage runs on appointment times and container availability rather than distance, so a short move can occupy a truck for most of a day.

Per diem and demurrage accrue while a container sits, which is why the return timing usually costs more than the run itself.

Bought as a service, a drayage move is priced per move rather than per mile, because the mileage is not what the truck spends its day on - the appointment and the wait are.
